Marvel And DC Movies Could Eventually Get A Cinema Crossover

Marvel And DC Movies Could Eventually Get A Cinema Crossover

But that might not be the movie that anyone wants to make

There's Marvel, and there's DC, and never the twain shall meet, right? Except that isn't right, in the comics world - I'm no collector of paperback superhero stories but even I have a Spider-Man and Batman crossover kicking about this mess, somewhere. And now in the superhero movie world, it seems that what was thought impossible might not be, actually.

As Comicbook reports, James Gunn - the director of Marvel's two Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel and the forthcoming third instalment, and of DC's summer-slated The Suicide Squad - has commented that it's probably not impossible for the twin titans of the superhero scene to crossover on cinemas screens, somewhen.

Posting on Twitter, in response to a much-asked question about the likelihood of a Marvel and DC movie crossover sometime, Gunn wrote:

"I've casually talked to the powers-that-be at both Marvel and DC about it. I would love for it to happen. I don't think it's likely, but I don't think it's an impossibility either. THAT SAID, just constantly seeing crossovers and mashups is less enchanting to me than a strong story."

Gotta agree there, James. In my experience, the superhero movies with several characters competing for screen time are rarely, if ever, as successful as those that focus only on a few. I suppose Endgame and Infinity War are exceptions to that - but they're less standalone pieces, more the climax to a series of more streamlined experiences. And don't get me started on the mess that is Justice League.

In entirely related news, we got our first proper look at the new Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy video game, during E3 2021. The Star-Lord-starring action-adventure title, made by the team at Eidos-Montréal, releases for consoles - including Nintendo Switch, via the cloud - and PC in October, and you can read all about it right here.

We also know that Zack Snyder, director of Justice League, is keen on taking the DC movies/his own SnyderVerse to new places - so chances are that he's not against this crossover idea, either.
