Though comic book fans are familiar with the idea of a hero's name changing hands when it's time to move on, the MCU has only just moved the name Captain America from Steve Rogers to Sam Wilson. The events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier solidified the identity of the new keeper of the shield and we look forward to Captain America's appearances in the rest of Phase Four MCU content. Back to the comic books, however, and a new series of Marvel comics is introducing a bunch of Captain Americas - the newest of which is Joe Gomez.

The new series from Marvel Comics is about how the name Captain America means more than just one person, it's a symbol of hope for communities across America. The official description of The United States of Captain America says, "The shield has been stolen! No one understands the value of the shield like those who've wielded it, so Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson set out on a road trip across America to chase down the thief.

If you missed The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it follows Bucky and Sam Wilson in a fight against a new enemy, the Flag Smashers. Here is the trailer:

"But instead, they find the Captains, everyday people from all walks of life who've taken up the mantle of Captain America to defend their communities. And for some reason, the shield thief wants them all dead. Can Sam and Steve get to them first?"

This next addition to the increasing roster of Captain Americas is Joe Gomez from the Kickapoo Tribe. According to Comicbook, he's a construction worker who feels the direct impact of seeing villains destroy the world around him again and again. In an interview with writer Darcie Little Badger, they say "Every time a spaceship crashes into a bridge or a supervillain transforms a whole city block into rubble, people like Joe make things whole again. Work like that may seem thankless, but Joe genuinely enjoys helping his community survive and thrive.

"That's why he won't charge elders for home repair services (the Joe Gomez senior discount is 100%). That's also why he's willing to risk his life to save others. I know lots of people like Joe--many of them my Indigenous relatives--so it was wonderful to help develop a character with his values, strength, and extreme crane-operating skills."

We've already met two other new Captain Americas, Aaron Fischer and Nichelle Wright, in the series already that Joe is adding to. We'll be waiting so see where The United States of Captain America goes next.
