'Marvel Midnight Suns' Announced, Starring Wolverine, Blade, Ghost Rider, And More

Never in a million years did I expect that we'd ever get a video game based on Midnight Sons, a team of supernatural heroes who fight the spookier corners of the Marvel universe. And yet, that's exactly what we're getting!

Marvel Midnight Suns is the rumoured XCOM-style strategy game from developer Firaxis Games and 2K, and it looks super slick. Take a look at the stunning rock-tastic reveal trailer below, starring Wolverine, Iron Man, Ghost Rider, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, and more. Excellent user of 'Enter Sandman', I have to say.

"When Hell awakens, only they can stop it," reads the trailer description. "Rise up and join a darker order of heroes to defeat Lilith before the Darkhold is complete in this tactical RPG set in the darker side of the Marvel Universe."

According to PC Gamer, Midnight Suns might have an XCOM-like structure to it, but it remains its own beast entirely. Players will be able to choose up to three heroes from a roster of 12. So far, 10 have been announced: Dr. Strange, Magik, Iron Man, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Blade, Captain America, Nico Minoru, and Captain Marvel.

These heroes will then join your own brand-new (and fully customisable) character: The Hunter, who just so happens to be the child of the game's antagonist Lilith, Mother Of Demons. From here, it's a single-player RPG with some Mass Effect-style choices that can affect the outcome of the story as you select missions from your base, The Abbey. Oh, and said base can be completely upgraded and customised to suit your needs too.

"When we were first designing combat in Marvel's Midnight Suns, we quickly realized that the mechanics of XCOM wouldn't work in this game," designer Jake Solomon told PC Gamer.

"In XCOM, you take a group of soldiers and they are outmanned and outgunned by the alien threat. In Marvel's Midnight Suns, you are a superhero and you should feel like the coolest person on the battlefield. Those mechanics from XCOM that were designed for that game didn't translate to Marvel's Midnight Suns, and we can say that combat in this game is completely different."

A full gameplay reveal is coming September 1, and the game is expected to March 22, 2022.
