'Marvel's Avengers' Creative Director Says Any Hero Has The Potential To Appear

Anyone could join the Avengers. Except maybe Howard The Duck, I guess.

Marvel's Avengers boasts an all-star cast of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. When the Square Enix-published superhero adventure was finally revealed during E3 2019, we were treated to an epic look at Hulk, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor and Captain America in action. It was a glorious sight for comic book fans everywhere, no doubt about that.

Of course, Square previously promised that the five heroes we saw in the reveal trailer wouldn't be the only ones set to show up in Marvel's Avengers.

Sure enough, Square and Marvel announced during Gamescom that Kamala Khan - AKA Ms Marvel - would also play a huge role in the game's story. Khan is instrumental in bringing the Avengers back together in the wake of a terrible tragedy, as detailed in the game's most recent trailers.

Six, fully-developed heroes, each with their own unique play styles, is a hugely exciting prospect on its own... but who says the fun has to stop at a half-dozen icons? After all, Infinity War and Endgame proved that you can literally pull as many Marvel heroes out of the toybox as you want, and people will be into it.

Marvel fans everywhere will no doubt be glad to know, then, that the team working on Marvel's Avengers won't rule anyone out when it comes to inclusion in the upcoming title. I recently sat down with the game's Creative Director, Shaun Escayg, to talk about how development on Marvel's Avengers was going, and what fans can expect from it when it launches next May.

Touching on the subject of Kamala Khan and how great it is to see a younger, lesser-known (by the mainstream) hero represented in the game, I asked Escayg if we could expect to see more heroes like Khan join the adventure - either as DLC or as part of the game's story.

"There's a potential for many characters to enter this world," Escayg explained, clearly not wanting to give too much away. "So what I will say is that there's... always potential, yes."

We already knew that Square Enix planned to support the game's co-op multiplayer with all kinds of post-release content - and a big part of that is the addition of further heroes. Escayg wouldn't say which - if any - additional heroes we might see included in the game's original story, sadly.

Obviously he didn't want to spoil any story details or potential surprise appearances for fans, but his comments do give me hope that the DLC additions - whoever they end up being - will be a good mix of more obscure heroes and the well-known favourites. I just want Howard The Duck, to be honest.

I also asked Escayg if there any Avengers that, for whatever reason, Square just weren't allowed to include. He explained to me that wasn't the case, and that the team we see in the story are the team that best served the story. It probably also helps that it's arguably the most famous Avengers lineup now, thanks to the Marvel movies.

"I wouldn't say there were any Avengers that we couldn't include," he said. "I would say that we wanted to stay true to the story. We included what we needed for the story, and what would give us the most conflict, and the most resolution to the story."

While I would have loved to have gotten confirmation from Escayg that Howard The Duck would be in the game (do it, cowards), as a fan I'm honestly more excited to play through Marvel's Avengers next May and experience whatever surprises may await for myself.
