Bad news, True Believers, Square Enix has opted to delay the upcoming Marvel's Avengers by an eye-watering four months. The Crystal Dynamics-developed action/adventure game starring Earth's Mightiest Heroes was previously scheduled to release on May 15th. It'll now arrive on September 4th.
This is undeniably a huge delay for Square Enix, as the four-month gap pushes Marvel's Avengers out of the current financial year and into the next. It also brings it a lot closer to the launch of Sony and Microsoft's next-gen consoles - though whether or not Marvel's Avengers could end up a cross-gen title remains to be seen.
For now, it seems Crystal Dynamics simply intends to use this extra development time to polish up the game bring it up to the "high standards" the studio feels the fans deserve.
"At Crystal Dynamics our ambition has always been to deliver the ultimate Avengers gaming experience," the studio wrote in a statement. "In order to achieve that goal, we have made the difficult decision to move the release date of Marvel's Avengers to September 4, 2020."

"As fans ourselves, it's an honor and a privilege to work with these legendary characters and we know what these Super Heroes mean to us and True Believers around the world. When we set out to bring you our vision for Marvel's Avengers, we committed to delivering an original story-driven campaign, engaging co-op, and compelling content for years to come."
"To that end, we will spend this additional development time focusing on fine tuning and polishing the game to the high standards our fans expect and deserve."
"The worldwide teams working on Marvel's Avengers sincerely appreciate the support you've shown us. We thrive on your enthusiasm and feedback and we can't wait to show you more. We apologize for the delay. We're confident it will be worth the wait."
While disappointing for Marvel fans, the news of this delay perhaps isn't entirely surprising. Unveiled during E3 2019 with a brief demo after first being announced in 2017, Marvel's Avengers was met with a fairly lukewarm reaction. Fans in particular, were quick to criticise the look of the game - particularly the character models of heroes like Captain America and Black Widow.

In recent months we've been able to go hands-on with the game ourselves. I personally had a ton of fun playing with some of the different heroes in the build I played (particularly Captain America and Thor), though I - and many others - seemed to be of the opinion that it was a little rough around the edges.
That's to be expected of a demo, of course, but the length of this delay implies Marvel's Avengers is perhaps a little rougher around the edges than any of us had suspected.
In other Square Enix news, the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake has also been delayed. Thankfully, the anticipated RPG hasn't been pushed back by much longer.
