'Marvel's Avengers' Accidentally Doxxed Streamers In Latest Update

Marvel's Avengers has had its fair share of issues since release. Even during the beta for the game, players experienced massive glitches and instabilities, and even more multiplayer problems arose post-release. There aren't many people who have stuck with the Crystal Dynamics project - and now the game has somehow managed to dox those precious few loyal players.

Via a recent update, Marvel's Avengers has started to show the IP addresses of players on screen without their consent, nor with a settings change. It's just there on the screen for the world to see, which is especially a problem for those who were caught streaming the game when this bug happened. GameRant spotted a user named Cyael on Twitter saying that they'd just been doxxed by showing their IP on stream, which is extremely concerning.

Forbes journalist Paul Tassi confirmed the issue by loading up his own game and showing a screenshot with the glitch in action.

This new issue arose with the 1.8.0 patch for Marvel's Avengers. Shortly after announcing the patch notes, the developers put out a post warning people of the issue and acknowledging that the IP addresses were indeed appearing on-screen: "We're aware of the issue where a floating string of text appears on the screen and are investigating. Thank you for the reports!"

Then the official Marvel's Avengers account also warned streamers to not engage with the game while this issue is present: "Please refrain from streaming for now if you're experiencing this issue. We will update when this issue has been resolved."

Doxxing has potentially dangerous implications for streamers. Internet personalities of any size can receive harassment, stalking, and even threats online - so giving viewers the ability to know where the streamer lives is incredibly unsafe.

Fans who have stuck with the game have, however, been looking forward to its Black Panther expansion, Marvel's Avengers: War for Wakanda, which is set to release in August 2021. It'll focus on T'Challa and Klaw battling it out to take control of the expensive resource, vibranium, and we'll see some other friendly Avenger faces along the way too, like Steve Rogers and Tony Stark.
