It seems all that talk from BioWare about having not forgotten about Mass Effect was more than just empty promises to please the fans. According to a new report from Kotaku, the Edmonton branch of the EA-owned studio is currently working on Mass Effect 5. That's not the official title of the game as far as we know, to be clear.
Let's face it though, they're not about to call it Andromeda 2, are they?
The project is still in very early stages of development, but it was reported that a team at BioWare Edmonton is currently working under Mike Gamble. Gamble has been with the studio since 2009, and worked on Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, and Mass Effect Andromeda as well as Anthem.
BioWare has been toying with the fans for months now, as several key figures at BioWare have gone on record to assure fans that the sci-fi RPG franchise would return one day. BioWare Executive Eroducer Mike Darrah told Polygon in an interview a while back that they're "definitely not done" with Mass Effect.
"There's a lot of stories to be told", he explained to Polygon. "We could pull on the threads we put down with Andromeda; we could pull on threads from Mass Effect 3. There's a lot of interesting space to be explored."
More recently, BioWare General Manager and Mass Effect director Casey Hudson took to Twitter to share some concept art of the original trilogy. He also appeared to tease the future of the franchise, hinting that BioWare still has plenty of ideas and stories left to tell.
While the real meat of Kotaku's report is more to do with Anthem and how BioWare plans to overhaul the struggling shooter, it concluded with what we've all been waiting years to hear. A new Mass Effect game is in "very early" development alongside Dragon Age 4.
As Darrah told Polygon, there are a lot of directions BioWare could go in for Mass Effect 5. The studio could pick up from Andromeda or follow-up on the events of Mass Effect 3. Either way, it's good to know that one of the most beloved RPG franchises out there is getting another shot at redemption.
