Mass Effect Trilogy Still Set For 2020 Release Despite Potential COVID-19 Delay

If you played the Mass Effect trilogy in the PS3/360 era, there's a good chance you've had a hankering to replay it on current-gen hardware. I know I have (and I was entirely OK with ME3's ending, before all that drama). But, for whatever reason, the Mass Effect trilogy has not, yet, appeared for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 or even - dare we dream? - Nintendo Switch. Please, EA, give me the interstellar adventures of Shepard and chums on my console of convenience, please?

Well, it seems that an official announcement for Mass Effect Trilogy was planned for 2020 - and might still be. And that announcement could be followed very promptly by the collection's release. At least, that's according to one games journalist whose name is increasingly attached to rumours such as these - VentureBeat's Jeff Grubb.

Speaking on the GamesBeat Decides podcast, and subsequently reported by VGC and Eurogamer, Grubb said that the Mass Effect Trilogy announcement was set for October 2020 - but that it might slip due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Said the journalist: "Up until like this last week, I know the plan for sure was to announce it in early October, (and) release later in October. So, good news."

Grub added that "maybe that could start to slip, it sounds like maybe that's a possibility, nothing for sure yet". Whether that slip will slide all the way to 2021, I guess, depends on EA - but Grubb is confident that he has "seen more than enough evidence to know it's real".

Of course, we can't officially verify what Grubb's saying here - but let's just say that the existence of Mass Effect Trilogy's been something of a terribly kept secret for a long time now. Which is to say: if you do have that hankering to replay the three Mass Effect games that came before 2017's somewhat disappointing Mass Effect: Andromeda, you might not have long to wait. Might be this year, maybe early next. Might even be that EA waits to see how Star Wars: Squadrons performs when it launches in early October before making any announcement.

And yes, the rumours are that Mass Effect Trilogy will also come to Switch - which is something to be excited for. Having the BioShock trilogy release for Nintendo's hybrid console earlier in 2020 showed it can handle large-scale games of that era perfectly well - so Mass Effect should feel right at home on the handheld screen. Cannot wait.

As for what 'more' Mass Effect Trilogy will offer, it'd be weird if the games weren't somewhat upgraded for the more-powerful Xbox One and PlayStation 4. But even if they came out pretty much as they were back in the day - the original Mass Effect turns 13 this November (what a year 2007 was for games, huh?) - I don't think many fans would mind. Mass Effect's never been about the looks - it's all about those stories that run through it, those close friendships and fallen companions and epic enemies and whatever Shepard gets up to in his or her private time.

The ship collection! I'm entirely and only talking about the ship collection. Obviously.
