Man Born Without An Arm Gets Futuristic Bionic Replacement

Man Born Without An Arm Gets Futuristic Bionic Replacement

Without the missile-launch ability, of course.

This man has a real life replica of Venom Snake's bionic arm (minus the gizmos), owing to a collaboration between a prosthetics company and developer Konami.

Venom Snake's bionic myoelectric prosthesis was given to the character following his injuries in the Ground Zeroes Incident in 1975. Not only was it used in combat, to deliver 120 volts to shock an enemy unconscious, a missile-based function where the arm would be launched at an enemy, and a wisp-based function which teleports the enemy to Venom Snake's location, it also came in a variety of colours, like yellow, black, blue, and grey. Very fancy.

This real-life design is in fact a shell which magnetically clips onto the bionic arm and Daniel Melville, from Reading, UK, is the lucky recipient. "This is unbelievable. It's everything I've ever wanted from a bionic arm. I'm an avid gamer and love Metal Gear Solid so much and to actually have Snake's arm in real life is just insane," he said. Melville was born without his right hand, and has been using a "Hero Arm" for the past three years.

The Hero Arm is the most affordable bionic arm on the market right now, and it's engineered for the user in an innovative way. A three-dimensional scan of the limb is taken, to ensure comfort and a custom-fit build. It's also suitable for children and adults alike, and uses space grade motors, advanced software and long-lasting batteries to offer intuitive and effortless movements. Though lightweight, it's also tough and able to lift up to eight kilograms. Not too shabby.

"We're incredibly excited to collaborate with Open Bionics, who are at the cutting edge of robotics. We're thrilled to see the iconic Metal Gear aesthetic of Venom Snake and his bionic arm burst out of the screen and come to life, in a dynamic fusion of technology and design that is changing the lives of upper limb amputees all over the world," said Konami, and Open Bionics COO and co-founder Samantha Payne expressed what a "pure joy" it is to produce this shell for the prosthetic arm.

The Metal Gear design is the newest shell to be released by Open Bionics, but it also has a range of other shells that riff off of popular films and games. There's Star Wars BB-8 and R2-D2 shells, an Iron Man one which is absolutely the coolest choice for any budding engineers, a Disney Frozen themed shell, and a Deus Ex one that is reminiscent of Adam Jensen's augmentations.
