'Metal Gear Solid' Movie Going All-In On Hardcore Stealth Action, Says Director

'Metal Gear Solid' Movie Going All-In On Hardcore Stealth Action, Says Director

Worried about how far from the source material the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie will stray? Put that fear in your back pocket, because it sounds as if the project's director is fully invested in making Snake's big screen debut as authentic as possible.

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts - a self-confessed mega-fan of the iconic Konami video game series - recently shared an update on the film. Specifically, he spoke about he wants to really translate the game's inimitable stealth-action to the screen in a way that preserves its immersive, butt-clenching tension.

Take a look at a remake of the legendary Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater below!

Speaking to EW, Vogt-Roberts revealed his grand plan to "create a new type of action on screen that also is based in the quietness of the stealth". That sounds... ambitious. Still, it's clear he knows his stuff, explaining he wants to replicate that sense of "knowing that every step you take as you go further into the belly of the beast" takes us "further away from safety".

It's heartening to hear Vogt-Roberts is really giving this a lot of thought. Video games don't easily make the jump to the screen, and the director is all-too aware of "the active experience of playing a game" not meshing with the "passive experience of watching a film".

"Those aren't one-to-one translations," he explained. "So, I think you really need to understand when playing a game what it elicits from you, why it makes you feel certain ways, what the tone that it evokes is."

Luckily for Vogt-Roberts, quite a lot of Metal Gear Solid is basically cutscenes anyway. There's no set release date for Metal Gear Solid yet, but we know that it'll star Oscar Isaac (Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Dune) as Solid Snake. We're assuming the movie will loosely adapt the first game and deal with Snake's mission to infiltrate Shadow Moses and disable the Metal Gear, but that's yet to be confirmed. As long as Oscar Isaac hides in at least one box, I'll be happy.
