Something incredible has happened. After half a decade, players have finally been able to legitimately unlock the secret ending to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
For those that don't know, Metal Gear Solid V's secret ending can only unlock when every single player of the game has removed all nuclear weapons from their own in-game bases. The cutscene was triggered on PC a few years ago thanks to a glitch, but I'm not sure anybody ever expected to be able meet the conditions needed to see the ending legitimately.
And yet, it finally happened. Each version of Metal Gear Solid V has its own nuke counter, which fans have been tracking through the nuke watcher site. It was the PlayStation 3 version that finally hit zero on July 27th (as spotted by PCGamesN). The counter swiftly went back up to 40, but the complete and total lack of nuclear weapons for just a few seconds was enough to trigger the disarmament ending - which you can see for yourself below.

There have been some dedicated community efforts over the years devoted to scrapping in-game nukes and earning the elusive scene legitimately. The Metal Gear anti-nuclear subreddit is just one group who were keen to work with all players to remove nukes on all platforms. It's an ambitious goal, and not one I ever thought would be met.
Of course, while the PlayStation 3 hit the big zero, collaborating so that all platforms are rid of all nukes at the same time is most likely never going to happen. At the time of writing, the Steam version of Metal Gear Solid V still has a little over 19,000 nukes. The PlayStation 4 version, meanwhile, has close to 2,500. The PS3 version is already back up to 45, so who knows if that'll go down again?
But who cares if it ever happens again? At least we can enjoy the fact that for one glorious moment on July 27th, 2020, PlayStation 3 gamers were able to bring about world peace. And they didn't even have to resort to using glitches to do it.
