As we all know, Minecraft can be a game of delirious highs and crushing lows. For every moment of genuine tranquility, there's a flash of shocking violence and abrupt chaos, in which everything you've worked for can be erased in an instant. Even the smallest of mistakes can be punished in the largest ways - nowhere is this more true than in the game's Hardcore mode.

Hardcore mode is certainly true to its name. Die while playing in this incredibly intense mode, and you lose absolutely everything. Rather than simply respawn with no items, you're done. Totally dead. You don't come back, and the world you were in is gone forever, along with anything you might have had in that world.

Naturally, those playing in Hardcore mode are incredibly careful and cautious. The longer your survive in this mode, the more invested you are and the more cautious you learn to be. That's very much the genius of it. That's also why it's so heartbreaking whenever a player who was doing everything right blows it all with one tiny mistake.

That's kind of what happened to Twitch streamer Gisthekey (via GameRant), who threw away everything after an incredible 500-hour run. It seems that the streamer was attempting to build some kind of zoo in the basement of his Minecraft home, with seperate cells for some of the game's many creatures. In a move that I wouldn't actually refer to as careful or cautious, Gisthekey was attempting to trap a Creeper. You know, the things that literally explode and take everything with them.

While dealing with the beast, Gisthekey fell through the trap door he was standing over... straight into the glass box he'd trapped the Creeper in. You can probably work out the rest. But on the offchance you can't, you can simply watch the clip right here to see how exactly it went down. Spoiler: It did not end well.

The good news is that Gisthekey seemed to take the blunder in his stride, ultimately laughing it off and moving on. Good on him, because if I'd lost 500 hours of progress in any game, I think I just curl up into a ball and weep heavily and openly until I eventually passed out through dehydration. But hey, that's why I don't - and will never - play Minecraft in Hardcore mode. I'm just not cut out for it.
