Minecraft’s New Sonic The Hedgehog Pack Is The Closest We're Getting To 'Sonic Adventure 3'

Sonic and friends haven't looked this polygonal in a while

Whoever had a Sonic x Minecraft crossover on their 2021 bingo card, congratulations, you predicted perhaps the strangest collaboration of the year. To celebrate 30 years of Sonic the Hedgehog and friends, SEGA has teamed up with Mojang to add special skins and environments to Minecraft, and honestly it looks sort of cool.

The trailer for the new DLC was published on social media on June 22 and it gives us our first look at a blocky version of the blue blur and his companions. If you hadn't told me that the DLC was for Minecraft though, I think I'd find it pretty difficult to tell from the trailer that it's the sandbox adventure game. It's such a different look for both Minecraft and Sonic.

Here is the trailer for the official Sonic x Minecraft crossover...

The DLC adds familiar Sonic series levels to run through, from Green Hill Zone to the Chemical Plant Zone, and even includes the Chao Garden. Sonic isn't the only familiar face you'll see either, as costumes for Amy, Knuckles, Tails, Shadow, and Dr Robtnik are also available.

As PSU notes, this isn't the only unexpected place you'll see Sonic for his 30th birthday. The world's fastest hedgehog can also be seen in Two Point Hospital, SEGA's forthcoming Judgment sequel Lost Judgment, and perhaps most excitingly in Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - The Official Video Game (which we've reviewed, over here). The Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games series has been a huge success over the years, so the official game recognising Sonic's contribution is pretty rad - even if he's just a costume and not the actual character.

The Sonic x Minecraft crossover is available in the Minecraft Marketplace right now, so give it a go! Sonic's next official outing is Sonic Colors Ultimate, a remaster of the 2010 platformer. It's set to release on September 7 2021 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Epic Games Store.
