It's safe to say that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a hit. According to a new investor report published by Activision, the recently-released reboot has had the most successful launch of any Call of Duty title so far this generation.
Managing to net an eye-watering $600 million worldwide in its first three days on sale, it enjoyed a bigger, better launch than its current-gen predecessors Infinite Warfare, WWII, and Black Ops 4. It's unclear if Activision includes Black Ops 3, Ghosts, and Advanced Warfare in this, given those games all released on PS3 and Xbox 360 as well as PS4 and Xbox One.
Regardless, it's a pretty damn impressive achievement for Infinity Ward and Activision gritty new take on the franchise, and should serve as final proof to the publisher that people enjoy Call of Duty best when its grounded in reality.
"Call of Duty is once again the top selling new premium game of the year, proving the enduring nature of the franchise across console, PC, mobile, and esports," said Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard's Chief Executive Officer. "In its first three days of release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare more than doubled the box office opening of Joker."
I mean, someone should probably explain to Kotick that a cinema ticket is considerably less expensive than a AAA game, but... well done, I guess.
"Through the first three days, Modern Warfare has more total players and total hours played than any Call of Duty opening release in the last six years," added Activision President Rob Kostich.
"More importantly, our players are having a great time playing. Congratulations to Infinity Ward and all our teams involved on an incredible game and its spectacular launch. We also want to thank the community for your incredible support. The launch of Modern Warfare is only the start. There's much more to come."
Activision also confirmed that Modern Warfare smashed records on the PlayStation Network for highest digital pre-orders and highest three-day digital sales ever on PS4. In addition, the game has had the best PC launch the franchise has ever seen.
While Modern Warfare launched to mostly positive reviews, there's already been a fair amount of controversy around the game - specifically its campaign, which is currently being reviewed bombed due to what some have described as "anti-Russian propaganda." The PlayStation 4 version of the game currently has a user score of 3.3 based on 5,228 reviews.
Many have taken particular issue with the concerning way in which game's already controversial campaign rewrites the infamous 1991 Highway of Death attack, blaming the Russians for the real-life assault in which US, Canadian, British, and French forces assaulted the area and killed more than 350 soldiers, many of whom were reportedly unarmed and/or surrendering.
