Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has just hit not one, but two incredible milestones. Activision has announced that Infinity Ward's gritty, back-to-basics reboot has $1 billion in global sales. In addition, it's also been confirmed that the latest installment of the FPS franchise is the most-played Call of Duty title this generation, beating the likes of Infinite Warfare, WWII, and Black Ops 4.

Activision revealed in a press release (via Charlieintel) that Modern Warfare has "outpaced" all previous Call of Duty multiplayer experiences this generation, in terms of hours played, hours per player and average daily players. That it managed this feat just 50 days since launch is quite remarkable.

To add further context, Activision claims that the community has collectively sunk over 500 million hours into the game over 300 million multiplayer matches so far. That's across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

"The momentum for Modern Warfare from day one has been incredible," said Byron Beede, Executive Vice President and General Manager for Call of Duty.

"Players are having a great time and are continuing to engage across the multiplayer experience at the highest level in years. We're also seeing new franchise highs for this console generation in hours played, hours per player and average daily players. It's great to see the fan response to the hard work from our development teams led by Infinity Ward. Players are having a great time, and there's much more to come as we continue to deliver new content."

It's unclear whether or not Activision includes Black Ops 3, Ghosts, and Advanced Warfare when measuring this milestone, given those games were all cross-gen titles. Regardless, it's also worth noting that Modern Warfare had the biggest launch of any Call of Duty title this generation by some distance. In its first three days on sale, the FPS managed to pass $600 million in sales around the world.

Modern Warfare is clearly only just getting started, as Activision and Infinity Ward continue to roll out new content as part of the game's first "season." Today (December 18th) a whole heap of new STUFF comes to the game, including a new mode, two fan-favourite maps, and a whole mess of new Spec Ops missions and cosmetic items.

It's fair to say that Call of Duty is well and truly back on top of the pile, then. And if the game is doing this well after 50 days, just imagine how much it's gonna clean up if that rumoured free-to-play battle royale mode drops early next year. Stonks for days, as my old mum used to say.
