‘Mortal Kombat 11’ Gets 1995 Movie Skins That Give Off Huge Nostalgia

NetherRealm has turned back time in Mortal Kombat 11, releasing skins that riff off the cult classic movie from 1995.

The Klassic MK Movie Skin Pack, priced at £5, offers new skins for Sonya Blade, Raiden, and Johnny Cage based on their looks and outfits in the movie. Directed by Paul W. S. Anderson (that guy with a penchant for the wacky Resident Evil adaptations), the movie is a wonderful patchwork of CGI and practical effects, somersaults that defy the laws of gravity, and the guts and gore watered down to achieve a PG-13 rating. Still, in spite of the odds, it raked in more than $120 million at the box office, and it's earned a place in the hearts of the Mortal Kombat community... and those fans of schlocky and cheesy '90s movies.

The additions were actually uncovered in September, and sent players into a frenzy owing to the new audio files that suggested that special skins were on the way. And, they were right, as the voices and likenesses of actors Christopher Lambert, Linden Ashby and Bridgette Wilson-Sampras are now available in Mortal Kombat 11. Of course, Lambert plays Raiden, Protector of Earthrealm, Ashby plays Johnny Cage, and Wilson-Sampras plays Sonya.

Really though, the game has been on a retro kick of late, with John Rambo, RoboCop, and The Terminator stepping up to the plate, or stage, in recent DLCs. Sylvester Stallone provided his voice and likeness to the character, and his outfits are from First Blood, First Blood Part II, and Rambo III. According to the information in the game, Rambo "reactivated his ruthless fighting skills to infiltrate the MK Universe." Fair enough. You could have written "We thought it would be cool to have Rambo in the game so we did it" instead and I would have accepted that also.

Furthermore, we know that NetherRealm is seeking developers for new entries for the Mortal Kombat and Injustice series on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. NetherRealm flips from Mortal Kombat to Injustice, so we should expect the next Injustice game to arrive before the next Mortal Kombat game on next-gen consoles.
