The live-action Mortal Kombat movie is headed to cinemas a lot sooner than we'd previously expected. Warner Bros has confirmed that the upcoming (new) adaptation of the brutal fighting game franchise will be released on January 15th, 2021. That's a whole seven weeks earlier than its original March 5th slot.

The new release date puts Mortal Kombat at the start of Martin Luther King Day weekend in the US. As I understand it, releasing a film around this holiday in America tends to have a favourable impact on box office performance. No doubt Warner Bros are hoping this will be the case for Mortal Kombat.

Mortal Kombat finally started production in Adelaide, South Australia back in September this year. Warner Bros has reportedly been trying to get a reboot of the franchise off the ground since 2011, though it wasn't until 2016 that things really started to come together with the announcement of a director. Mortal Kombat will be the feature directorial debut of Simon McQuoid, known in the film industry for his work on commercials for PlayStation, Halo and Range Rover.

Joining McQuoid is Greg Russo, who revealed that he'd finished the script back in February this year. Meanwhile, James Wan (The Conjuring, Aquaman) is attached to the project as a producer.

Mortal Kombat really started to kick into gear in 2019. In addition to the news of a finished script, we've also had a steady stream of casting announcements for the project. Contrary to earlier reports, the movie will feature a number of popular characters from the franchise. Because... why wouldn't it?

Let's run through some of faces who'll be appearing in Mortal Kombat, because it really is quite a cast. Actor and martial artist Joe Taslim (The Raid), will be playing the antihero Sub Zero. Ludi Lin (Power Rangers, Black Mirror) is Shaolin monk Liu Kang. Supergirl actor Mehcad Brooks has been cast as Jax, while Tadanobu Asano (Thor) is reportedly in talks to play Raiden.

Finally, Chin Han (The Dark Knight) will be playing the demonic warlock Shang Tsung, while Hiroyuki Sanada (Westworld, Life) will be playing Scorpion - perhaps the most iconic character of Mortal Kombat.

We don't know anything at all about the actual plot of the movie so far, but I'd quite happily just watch this cast beat on each other for two hours. Russo previously confirmed that the film will be R-rated and feature big-screen fatalities that don't shy away from gore, so there's every chance that's exactly what we're gonna get.
