The hype for Netflix's The Witcher is reaching fever pitch. On December 20th, viewers everywhere will finally be able to binge the long-awaited adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's critically acclaimed fantasy novels.
Will it fill the Game of Thrones-shaped hole our lives? Will Henry Cavill impress as Geralt of Rivia? Will there be an episode dedicated to finding an old frying pan? I honestly don't have the answers to any of those questions, but I can't wait to find out.
As we inch ever close to the show's debut, Netflix has released a handy little promotional feature in which star Henry Cavill explains a little bit about Geralt and his world. The Witcher is a fairly dense franchise, after all - in both the novels and games - so it would benefit any newcomers out there to head into the eight-episode series armed with some background information.
Check out the video below. Even if you know your Drowners from your Striga, it's worth a look. There's plenty of footage of the show we haven't yet seen peppered throughout. I was personally pleasantly surprised to get our best look yet at a kind of spider-like monster, called a Kikimore, in the middle of an intense-looking battle with Geralt.
"You are almost universally hated," Cavill explains of the attitude towards Witchers in the show. "By every species on The Continent. It's unlikely you're going to have a cheery personality. But Geralt himself, despite his stony exterior is actually quite good... but very capable of doing bad things."
"Geralt isn't simply a white knight," the actor adds. "He isn't simply a harsh monster hunter, he's an incredible blend of the two."
We've already known for a while that Cavill has long been a fan of both the books and games, but it's still great to hear him speak so passionately about Geralt. This is a character he clearly has a solid understanding of, and I can't wait to see what he brings to the role.
We recently learned that the actor was inspired in part by Doug Cockle's iconic performance in the CD Projekt RED Witcher games, a revelation that was particularly well-received by fans. Cockle's gruff tones made him a perfect Witcher, and Cavill's take on that should make for a very interesting Geralt indeed.
Cavill will be joined in The Witcher by Anya Chalotra as Yennefer and Freya Allan as Ciri, who both also look like they're going to be brilliant. In fact, the show has already been renewed for a second season and could even run for many, many more years, so I assume that someone at Netflix thinks the cast and crew have hit on something truly special.
