New Battlefield Game Reportedly Already In Development, EA Taking "Valuable Lessons" From '2042' Failure

I'm not sure that there's a single person out there who can wholeheartedly say that Battlefield 2042 lived up to their expectations. It was one of those releases that probably fell even harder than it should have done thanks to the hype surrounding it before it came out, but there's no doubt that the buggy, seemingly unfinished state it was presented to us in was pretty poor.

With that in mind, I'm not sure if it's good or frankly concerning news that EA DICE are apparently already moving on to the next game in the series. That's according to a new report on Xfire from industry insider Tom Henderson, who's been known to deliver reliable information about Battlefield in the past.

Even if the game itself was a bit of a flop, there's no doubt it has some funny moments - check out our favourite Battlefield 2042 wins and fails below.

Reportedly, the next Battlefield game is in its pre-production stage, and a large portion of DICE have moved onto working on that, despite being just four months on from the release of 2042 (which is still missing a lot of its originally promised content). Henderson notes that this is industry standard, however, and that there's still a "strong and dedicated" team continuing work on 2042.

Apparently, the series' most recent title has internally been called "a miss", but an inside source claimed that "valuable lessons" were learned from it: "I think we'll be reverting a lot of the changes we made in Battlefield 2042," they said.

The suggestion that the devs are going back on some of the newly introduced changes isn't at all surprising - earlier this month, it was announced in a statement on EA's website that there are a number of big plans to improve Battlefield 2042's gameplay experience, which include halving 128-player lobbies to 64, and for future maps to be smaller, and take inspiration from the older games in the series. I'm sure no one will be complaining about that.

Obviously, right now, not only is this information about the next game unofficial, but assuming it is true, it's probably going to be a long time until we actually see anything of it. In the meantime, we'll have to see if the updates brought to Battlefield 2042 are positive, and if so, hope that they might be applied to the next instalment in the series, too. Henderson claims that it's currently set to have a "modern/near-future setting", so presumably it'll be called Battlefield 2030. If that ends up being right, you heard it here first.
