A brand-new Blade Runner game has been announced, and it promises to bridge the gap between the original movie and Blade Runner 2049. Great news for fans of the neo-noir science fiction franchise, although the hardcore among you will be aware this new game is hardly the first piece of media to explore the Blade Runner universe outside of the movies.

The aptly titled Blade Runner RPG is a new tabletop role-playing game from Free League Publishing. Blade Runner RPG will take place in Los Angeles in the year 2037, not long after the debut of Wallace Corporation's Nexus-9 Replicants.

"This is the BLADE RUNNER roleplaying game - a neon-noir wonderland that'll take your breath away. One way or another," reads an overview on the game's website.

"An evocative world of conflicts and contrasts that dares to ask the hard questions and investigate the powers of empathy, the poisons of fear, and the burdens of being human during inhumane times. An iconic and unforgiving playground of endless possibilities that picks you up, slaps you in the face, and tells you to wake up. Time to live. Or time to die."

Players will choose to play as either humans or Replicant Blade Runners, travelling the world and solving cases. The game is described as an investigative tabletop RPG "giving players a range of tools to solve an array of cases far beyond retiring Replicants". It will also, of course, tackle many of the themes addressed in Blade Runner and its 2017 sequel.

The rules of Blade Runner RPG are based on the Year Zero Engine, which fans of the genre will know has been used in award-winning games such as the ALIEN RPG, Tales From the Loop and Forbidden Lands. It has been "further developed and uniquely tailored" to suit the world of Blade Runner. The game is dropping next year.
