Gorillaz have revealed the music video for The Valley of the Pagans, and it takes place in Los Santos from Grand Theft Auto V.

In the video, the gang reverse into a prismatic portal of some sort, which brings them into the world of the hugely popular action game. Slightly stunned, Noodle then puts the pedal to the metal and they see the sights of the city. Also, they ring the singer and songwriter Beck, who appears on an iFruit phone in the corner. Somehow, the interdimensional journey still allows for video calls with very good picture and sound quality. Who'd have thunk it?

This is the latest entry to the band's twelve-month Song Machine collection, which comprises various collaborations with other artists, plus a cool music video to boot. "Song Machine is a whole new way of doing what we do, Gorillaz breaking the mould 'cos the mould got old," explained drummer Russel Hobbs. "World is moving faster than a supercharged particle, so we've gotta stay ready to drop. We don't even know who's stepping through the studio next. Song Machine feeds on the unknown, runs on pure chaos. So whatever the hell's coming, we're primed and ready to produce like there's no tomorrow."

"Running on pure chaos" sounds like Grand Theft Auto V to me, and at the end of the song, the group return home... but their journey is hijacked with a visit to the island on the front of their album, Plastic Beach. The car sinks into the sea, and a teaser for the next song looms: The Lost Chord. It's not a total loss, though. A helpful YouTube commenter by the name of Terry The Black Mage has offered a how-to guide for replicating the "Pagan" car in Grand Theft Auto V. Whack on the lofi song, drive around the virtual city, and you'll be happy as Larry.

The game itself is going from strength to strength, more than seven years after it was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Another 15 million copies have been sold this year, bringing the total number to 135 million copies sold. "With more people staying at home, we have experienced, and are continuing to experience, heightened levels of engagement and net bookings growth-to-date," said Rockstar Games' parent company in the fiscal report. Moreover, the game will be getting technical enhancements and performance upgrades for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions, and will offer Grand Theft Auto Online for free.
