Spiral: From the Book of Saw is the next entry into the iconic Saw series, and this new trailer will be right up the street of longtime fans and horror buffs.

Chris Rock and Saw probably aren't a name and a title that you'd expect to see side by side, but he's had this idea in the works for a while. The actor plays Detective Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks, who discovers that there's a serial killer mimicking the horrifying modus operandi of the Jigsaw Killer. With his rookie partner Detective William Schenk (played by Max Minghella), the investigation will take them into the darkness at the heart of the city, and they will realise that the past won't be buried easily. The concept of Spiral actually arose at a wedding, where Rock met with Lionsgate CEO Joe Drake by happenstance. Of the new direction for the classic horror movies, Drake said that Rock's intentions are simultaneously "completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise."

Interesting. Fans will also be happy to hear that the story has been penned by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, the duo behind Jigsaw. In the film, it looks like Zeke will be targeted by the mysterious killer as they leave a trail of wrapped gifts and a strange spray-painted spiral. As Zeke and his team attempt to track their movements and understand what is motivating their depraved actions, their psyches start to fray and it looks like they continue to play into their hands. Things become even more complex when it is theorised that Zeke's estranged father (played Samuel L Jackson) may have some sort of connection to these crimes. In short, think Saw blended with Prisoners.

At this point, Spiral will be the ninth Saw movie since the series started in 2001. However, if you think that the team is ultimately boxing itself into a corner with the tried-and-true formula, that couldn't be further from reality, according to director Darren Lynn Bousman. "It's unlike any of the Saw films that have come before it," said Bousman in an interview with Horror Geek Life. "This is completely its own thing." Spiral: From the Book of Saw releases on May 14th, 2021.
