The Worms are back, and this time they demand trial by real-time combat. Developer Team17 announced earlier this year that it was bringing back the classic franchise like we've never seen it before, and they weren't kidding around.

Worms Rumble seems to have completely done away with the turn-based warfare of old in favour of... a real-time battle royale. You can check out the first trailer below, for a glimpse of a game that looks more like Super Smash Bros. than the Worms of old.

"Worms Rumble is unlike anything we have ever done with a Worms game before," Team17 said in an announcement. Features include 32-player online matches, as well as battle royale and deathmatch modes. Team17 also promises the "largest maps" we've ever seen in a Worms game, solo and squad based gameplay, and a bevy of ways to customise your Worm.

Team17 producer Danny Martin later explained in a post for PlayStation blog why the studio felt it was time for Worms to depart from its tried-and-tested formula.

"We of course love the turn-based versions of Worms and it's what we've done for so many years," he wrote. "Working on Worms W.M.D was an absolute blast and we're really proud of it. But we've always wanted to push the envelope that little bit further and scratch that "what-if" itch. Sure, we've done spins offs of Worms before, but we wanted to go all out and see if we could pull off a real-time version of Worms."

"We started prototyping Worms Rumble a couple of years ago with just a small team, and what they came up with in such a short space of time really piqued our interest and made us pretty excited for what we could do."

Worms Rumble cross-play support between PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, which is pretty cool. A multiplayer beta will be available on Steam from July 15th to July 20th. Simply follow this link and register your name if you fancy a chance at getting in to that.

There's no word on a release date just yet, but we can assume it won't be too long after the beta wraps up. Team17 previously said it'd release in 2020, so keep an eye out for news on the Worms Rumble release date over the next month.

As someone with a lot of love for the Worms games of yore, I'm intrigued to see how switching the mayhem to real-time will change things up. After all, a big part of the original games was being forced to sit there unable to move while your enemy snaked up to you, baseball bat in hand ready to yeet you off a cliff to your death. It was magical. But we must embrace change.
