Few things are certain in life, but you can always take comfort in the knowledge that some things, at least, will always come to pass. The sun will always rise in the east. There will always be people who find Mrs Brown's Boys funny for some reason. And Activision will put out a new Call Of Duty game every year.
Yes, 2020 will inevitably see the release of a successor to 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. But what form will the next Call of Duty - potentially the first next-gen instalment - take? Will it go back in time and offer a historical adventure in the same vein as WWII? Will it take place in a more contemporary setting, as Modern Warfare did? Will it perhaps once again head into the future and give players slightly more fantastical elements, in the way Infinite Warfare and (to a lesser extent) Black Ops 4 did?
It's impossible to say at this early stage. However, given the hugely positive reaction to Infinity Ward's back-to-basics approach in Modern Warfare, I'd wager that CoD 2020 - reportedly in development under Treyarch - won't stray too far from the "gritty and authentic" stylings of 2019's iteration.

Treyarch's studio design director David Vonderhaar seemed to suggest as much himself recently. In a brief exchange on Twitter (thanks, CharlieIntel), Vonderhaar revealed to a fan that the next CoD title won't have jetpacks. The addition of jetpacks to Call Of Duty has always been a divisive point among fans, with many arguing that their inclusion in the games detracts from a realistic and fully immersive experience.
While I've never cared personally whether or not CoD has jetpacks, there are doubtless some who will be glad to know the 2020 game won't have them. Not least Vonderhaar himself, who half-joked that he still has PTSD from the fan reaction last time Treyarch put jetpacks in a Call of Duty (Black Ops 3 in 2015).

While there's clearly not a lot of love for Black Ops 3 and the jetpacks found within, Treyarch do have reason to celebrate. Just recently, a massive fan vote revealed that 2012's Black Ops 2 was the most-loved Call of Duty game of the decade. This, despite official confirmation from Activision that Modern Warfare is the most-played and most successful CoD of this generation, by some way.
Given that Treyarch's last Call Of Duty was 2018's Black Ops 4, I can't imagine the studio will be prepping Black Ops 5 for release as the 2020 instalment of CoD... but I'm excited to see what the team has planned, regardless.
