Last summer Rockstar surprised us all* when they announced that Grand Theft Auto V would be coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles in 2021. The iconic 2013 game will be getting an "expanded and enhanced" port on next-gen hardware this year... although it's not exactly clear just how souped-up this latest version of the seven-year-old title will be.

All Rockstar has really told us so far is to expect "a range of technical improvements, visual upgrades and performance enhancements to take full advantage of the console's powerful new hardware, making the game more beautiful and more responsive than ever". That certainly sounds promising, and a definite sign that GTA V will be noticeably better-looking on the new consoles. We'd certainly hope so, too - especially if Rockstar intends to charge us for the damn thing again.

Over on the GTA Forums, dataminers found code tucked away in a recent update for GTA V and GTA Online that suggests the enhanced port will make use of RDR2's RAGE engine optimisations. The code, uncovered by GTA Forums user Tez2, directly references RDR2's RAGE version.

Fans now believe that in order for GTA V to get the visual boost it needs on next-gen consoles, it'll be sharing tech with 2018's Red Dead Redemption 2. Whatever your feelings on Rockstar's sad cowboy epic, there's absolutely no denying it was an achingly gorgeous game that pushed last-gen consoles to the absolute limit.

It's an interesting discovery that most users agree points towards Rockstar making user of the RDR2 engine to bring out the best in GTA V, albeit with some tweaks for the next-gen consoles. However, Tez2 does note that the code could also point towards the UI making use of RDR2's base code while the rest remains the same. Not quite as exciting, but a definite possibility, it seems.

In other GTA V news, it was recently confirmed that the open-world epic was the UK's third best-selling game of 2020, beating out the likes of The Last Of Us Part II and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Is it any wonder Rockstar wants to keep riding that gravy train all the way through the next-gen lifecycle?

*Nobody. They surprised nobody.
