Grandparents Gift Granddaughter Mint-Condition GameCube, They Think It's The Latest Console

The Nintendo GameCube might be over 20 years old at this point, but I'd argue it still makes one heck of a gift. Anything that can play Super Smash Bros. Melee, Metroid Prime, The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Luigi's Mansion never goes out of style, right?

That's why I'm as thrilled for as I am jealous of Twitter user Bootz, who revealed that her grandparents recently surprised her with a mint-condition GameCube. While Nintendo's box of delights is as great a gift in 2021 as it was in 2001, the really sweet thing here is that Bootz's grandparents actually thought they were giving her the latest console. My heart.

"My grandparents just gave me a mint-condition GameCube as a surprise because they know I love video games," she explained over on Twitter. "They think it's new."

So how exactly did this beautifully packaged GameCube survive for 20 years? According to Bootz, her grandparent's friends originally picked it up for their own grandkids back in 2001 when the console launched. Shockingly, those kids only ever used it "once or twice," accounting for its pristine condition. Bootz added that in "typical old people fashion", the console was kept in the box along with the manuals and plastics before being handed on to her own grandparents. You can absolutely see why they'd assume it was a new console, to be fair.

Given that a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 recently sold at an auction for nearly $1.5 million, a mint-condition GameCube might just be the best gift Bootz has ever received... all she has to do is keep it in the box for another 20 years and stumble across it in the attic one day.
