People Compare New Pokémon To 15-Year-Old 'Oblivion' And They're Not Happy

Reddit users have never been more upset about potential deforestation.

New Pokémon trailers dropped yesterday, and you know what that means, right? It's the return of Treegate, since everyone's favourite activity on the internet is determining how good a game is based solely on what its trees look like. Because we've not done that to death already, have we? Ohhhh joy.

Over on Reddit, gamers are comparing a shot from the latest Pokémon Legends: Arceus trailer with a screenshot from the 2006 Elder Scrolls installment, Oblivion. Both landscapes are fairly similar in their construction, with mountains off in the distance, and a river running through a valley, but presumably the point of contention here is... the amount of trees? Or something? Maybe they're just upset at the idea of deforestation (spoiler alert, they're not).

See what people are getting so bent out of shape about with the trailer for Pokémon Legends: Arceus here:

"You guys expect too much from the top selling video game franchise of all time," commented Reddit user bootleg-bean. "Legend has it that they are [taking] the billions they make with each Pokémon game and working hard to create a second tree model, which we might see by 2027," wrote calculon000. "Great to see them still putting as little work as possible into the game." added GreatQuantum.

Of course, not everyone is going to like a game or how something looks, and that's totally fine, but I know I'm not the only one sick of hearing people rant about trees, ever since they got latched on to during the Sword and Shield controversy. It's also worth noting that art styles are, in fact, a thing that exist, and it's been quite apparent from its first reveal trailer that Legends: Arceus is going for a cel-shaded style, not the more "realistic" look that Oblivion was aiming for. So, it's a bit like trying to compare The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker's's cartoony, cheery visuals with the darker look of Majora's Mask, and getting upset that they don't look the same. Oh wait...people did do that, didn't they? Hm.

At the end of the day, I don't think the majority of people playing Legends: Arceus are going to be spending most of their time looking at the trees. By the sounds of it, it's far more likely that you'll be on high alert, making sure you don't get mauled to death by a wild Ursaring. Anyway, Oblivion may be a great game, but it doesn't have Hisuian Growlithe, does it?
