One In Ten Gamers Would Rather Lose Their House Before Their Save Data

One in ten gamers would rather their house was destroyed before anything happened to their video game save data, according to an alarming new report.

Mobile game publisher Kwalee recently conducted a survey to find out just how important save data is to gamers. Pretty damn important, as it turns out. The study, which had over 2,000 UK and 2,000 US respondents, found that an incredible one in ten of them consider the progress they've made in video games to be more important than the roof over their heads. Yikes.

Don't get me wrong, I fully understand how important save data can be. I've poured hundreds of hours into games like Skyrim, Breath Of The Wild, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and I'd be heartbroken if anything ever happened to that data. But would I choose to destroy my home in order to maintain that data? Would I 'eck.

The only comfort I can really take this from this study is my firm belief that the respondents who'd be willing to destroy their house would, if actually presented with the choice, absolutely not put their save data first. It's easy to say something like that if it's a hypothetical. It's when we move into the reality of the situation that things get tricky.

A more relatable one in five say that they'd rather lose than phone than their save data, which... yeah. I think if push came to shove, I'd rather give up my phone. It'd be fairly expensive to replace, but save data? That's gone forever. Much like your home would be if you'd burned it down in an effort to keep the progress you'd made in Dark Souls 3.

"I've been making and playing games for over 30 years, and have always been driven by how immersed players can become in what you've created," said Kwalee CEO David Darling.

"We wanted to find out how far this love of gaming will go,and the fact people would trade their homes or wedding rings to retain their saves shows just how important gaming is to modern life. Of course, we wouldn't advise anyone to actually place their home above their game data, or admit to their partner that they'd happily get rid of their wedding ring to save it!"

If you'll excuse me, I need to go and lie down. I think this study has convinced me that video games might have been a mistake.
