An Iconic Military Shooter Free To Download And Keep Right Now

To celebrate 20 years since the release of Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and the birth of the Arma series, developer Bohemia Interactive is giving away the first game in the series for free on Steam and GOG.

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis is better known these days as Arma: Cold War Assault, of course. It's this iconic tactical shooter that you can now download and keep for the low, low price of nothing at all - but only for the next two days. You can get it via Steam from this link, or GOG from this one.

"The horrors of WWIII are imminent," reads the game's Steam description. "There are clashes over the Malden Islands from dusk to dawn and you are caught in-between. You must use all of the available resources in your arsenal to hold back the incoming darkness. Victor Troska came back to Nogovo, he thought the pain of war was left buried in his past.... But his dream lies broken now."

This unexpected freebie is part of "a full 20-day commemoration" of the series, which includes a special two-hour livestream featuring an orchestral performance of music from the games. There's also a fascinating chat between Bohemia Interactive CEO Marek Španěl, creative director Ivan Buchta, and Arma 3 community manager Niles George. The livestream is over now, but you can catch up on it here.

Bohemia Interactive's debut game was published by Codemasters as Operation Flashpoint back in 2001, and went on to be regarded as a truly genre-defining combat military sim, not to mention the best-selling PC game around the world, with over two million copies sold since its original release. If Arma: Cold War Assault passed you by at the time, I would urge you not to sleep on it now. This is a genuine slice of video game history, and it's well worth checking out for the price. Which is zero.
