Layers Of Fear 2 is free right now on the Epic Games Store, and it's excellent timing for the spooky season.

Developed by Bloober Team, the psychological horror game follows an actor who has been invited to an ocean liner by the director of their newest film. As the story progresses, the definitions between reality and terror blur, and the hull of the ship itself seems to house something that threatens your own sanity. "Is this part of the film, or are your memories playing tricks on you? Your world may change with the slightest of provocations, you must decide what is real," explained the developer in the official description.

Bloober Team has steadily served up the scares since Layers of Fear, which received praise for its suspenseful story and how this was intricately woven into the creaky old house that the player explored. The Inheritance DLC for the original game saw the events of Layers of Fear through different eyes, and in determinant endings, showed whether or not the family inevitably succumbed to their obsessions. Then, the developer pivoted to a sci-fi setting with Observer, which stars Rutger Hauer as a detective who hacks people's memories.

It's found its groove with horror games, and The Medium will be released on PC and Xbox Series S and X on December 10th. As its "largest and most ambitious project to date," it tells the story of Marianne, who is able to travel between the worlds of the living and the dead. "We're using a variety of means to immerse the player into both our worlds, including music and environment, and thanks to no loading screens these methods are so much more effective," explained producer Jacek Zięba earlier this year.

"Before, it was a bit of an uphill battle to keep the game immersive and cinematic despite obvious breaks, and now the next generation simply makes that problem go away," he continued, and added that the power of the console is very important to the "interactions between the real world and the spirit world." So, if you enjoy Layers of Fear 2, why not check out The Medium later this year?

The other game on offer on the Epic Games Store is Costume Quest 2, which is a turn-based adventure where the characters transform into Hallo-Warriors based on their costumes. A decidedly different vibe to Layers of Fear 2, but still spooky. Both games will be available to snap up for free until October 29th, but once they're in your library, they will be free to keep forever.
