'Resident Evil 7' Third-Person Mod Shows What’s Lurking In The Baker House

This mod for Resident Evil 7 switches its first-person perspective for a third-person perspective, and the results are terrifyingly effective.

Don't get me wrong, Resident Evil 7 is a brilliant game, and it revitalised the series' survival horror roots by placing the player in a dingy, dilapidated homestead populated by mutated monsters. Stepping away from the action-oriented Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, the game toyed with expectations with slow stretches of suspenseful exploration and puzzles, along with heart-thudding and explosive boss battles. However, in this leap into the unknown, it did leave the classic third-person perspective behind, and that was missed by a number of players.

Courtesy of modder cheezeit over on Nexus Mods, these players are now able to return to the over-the-shoulder camera angle for one of the most acclaimed games in the series. The mod offers options for its positioning, letting you either cosy up close or give those Molded a wide berth, and it works from the beginning of the game all the way to the end. The "Third-Person OTS Script" mod also lets you change between first-person and third-person perspective on the fly with an assigned hotkey, and it provides a setting to disable third-person when first-person would work better.

The only downside is that if you snapped up Resident Evil 7 on Xbox Game Pass, this version of the game does not support mods. Ergo, it's only Steam players who will be able to swap perspectives. To install the script, modder fluffyquack's Mod Manager is required, and you'll probably want the "Ethan With Head" model, too. Because, otherwise, he doesn't have one and it's a bit eerie. Or, you could opt for a Leon Kennedy model, which is compatible with the "Third-Person OTS Script" mod.

cheezeit does warn that Ethan is the only playable character with model mods at the moment. So, when the player plays the VHS, ship, and DLC sections, their character will be headless. Furthermore, animations the player is not normally supposed to see have a tendency to be... funky. Finally, Ethan doesn't emote at all during the game, so his panicked voice comes out of a totally stoic face. This might be the creepiest part of the mod, to be honest.

Of course, Resident Evil Village will be played through a first-person perspective, and from none other than Ethan himself. After a tragedy expels him from his home with Mia and their young baby, he is stranded in a village that is terrorised by werewolves and witches. Director Morimasa Sato enthused that there's a lot to look forward to in this new installment, and that even more surprises are in store. "We want the player to walk through and encounter things that make them think, 'Wow, you can even get to this place!', 'I didn't expect to find something like this,' or 'There's so much detail here!'" he explained. Hopefully, these discoveries don't include any cheat-induced decapitations.
