It's been a funny few weeks for fans of SIE Bend Studio's PlayStation 4 title Days Gone. As you've no doubt heard by now, any plans the developers had for a sequel were ultimately scuppered, as reports recently emerged that Sony had chose to reject SIE Bend Studio's pitch for the open-world zombie sequel back in 2019.

Bend is currently working on a new IP, but the fallout from the reveal that Days Gone 2 is currently dead has been considerable. On the one hand, there's been an outpouring of love and support from fans who are petitioning to revive the cancelled sequel. On the other hand, there's Days Gone director John Garvin.

Garvin, who is no longer with Bend, had some pretty choice words to share with those of us who didn't pick up Days Gone at launch. It's clear from the comments he made that he's not a fan of the fact the game is available via PlayStation Plus, even if that has a chance of opening up the open-world zombie adventure to new audiences.

"I do have an opinion on something that your audience may find of interest, and it might p*ss some of them off," Garvin explained on a recent podcast hosted by God Of War creator David Jaffe. "If you love a game, buy it at f*cking full price. I can't tell you how many times I've seen gamers say 'yeah, I got that on sale, I got it through PS Plus, whatever'."

This naturally caused a bit of stir within the community. For one thing, £60 is a lot for many people to put down on a game as soon as it releases. It's even harder in the case of a new IP. You have no idea if it's going to be any good, and that much money is an investment. It didn't help any that Days Gone was super buggy at launch, and many of the middling reviews left gamers with the impression it was simply better to wait until Days Gone was a little cheaper.

In response to Garvin's controversial comments, Days Gone lead designer Eric Jensen took to Twitter to assure fans that he's grateful to every single person who took the time to play Bend's game, regardless of when, where, or how they did so.

"Whether you picked up #DaysGone on day one, borrowed it from a friend, watched someone else play it, or tried it with PS Now or PS+, I appreciate you," he wrote. "Thank you for playing our game. The outpouring of love and support for our game and our studio has been incredible."

Days Gone is currently available for free for subscribers via PlayStation Plus and the PlayStation Plus Collection on PlayStation 5. It's definitely worth checking out, if you haven't already.
