PlayStation Fans Want Backwards Compatibility On PS5, And They Want It Now

Xbox gamers have the upper hand on that one.

According to a new poll, the most requested feature for the PlayStation 5 from players is the ability to play games from the PlayStation 1, 2, and 3 era of gaming. GameSpot received over 93,000 votes from community members who expressedthat overwhelmingly that they wanted to play Sony's backlog of titles on the newest platform.

Xbox gamers are a little jealous of the PlayStation 4's excellent DualSense controller but in turn, PlayStation gamers are a little jealous of how well Microsoft has added the backwards compatibility of Xbox games to the Series X and S. PlayStation, despite having a huge library of famous games in its back pocket, haven't really made an effort to bring them all to PlayStation 5 and fans want that to change. Another option on the poll was for Quick Resume to be introduced. Here's a a real quick example of that working on the Xbox Series X.

The poll gave fans four options: Folder Organisation, Quick Resume (the ability to flick back and forth between games incredibly quickly), PS1-PS3-era games on PSN or other. The backlog option won the poll easily with a huge 72% of the vote.

When the poll was presented to the PS5 subreddit on Reddit, fans also agreed. A user called crabgun_ (great name) says "If Sony's looking for something to compete with GamePass, they just need to put PS1-3 games on PS5 and I'd be happy as f**k".

Others pointed out that there are even more games stuck on platforms like the PlayStation Portable and Vita. The storefront for the Vita very nearly almost closed not too long ago before Sony had to do a 180, as it looked like so much content was going to be lost as a result. Apophisreignbos on Reddit says, "Of course, native backwards compatibility is essential for Sony and the hardcore PlayStation fans as they've amassed a huge collection of great exclusive software over the years that cannot be enjoyed on a modern system. Games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Killzone: Mercenary, Gran Turismo 5, and more still aren't available on currently supported systems."

And they're right, there is a lot of content that is currently stuck where it is without Sony getting into backwards compatibility. It'll be interesting to see how long they wait until introducing a system, or if they ever do at all. It seems like a mighty shame to not introduce more content onto the PlayStation 5 that players want when it's, in theory, just sitting there waiting to be upgraded.
