Original 'God Of War' Trilogy Could One Day Be Remade For PlayStation

Do it, you cowards.

A former Sony employee has revealed that the company once looked into the idea of remaking some of their most iconic exclusives for the PlayStation 4. It seems that remakes of the original God Of War and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune were floated at the company at one point - though of course nothing has come of either... yet.

This information comes from Michael Mumbauer, a former head at Sony San Diego Studio who worked with the company for several years. Speaking to former God Of War director David Jaffe for an instalment of the brilliant PlayStation Insider, Mumbauer touched on just how popular the idea of remakes was at Sony HQ for a time.

Mumbauer explained that while Shawn Layden's was the head of SIE Worldwide Studios, he was incredibly interested in leveraging the more powerful PS4 hardware to improve and enhance classic titles. The developer specifically cited Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy as an example, claiming that Layden was instrumental in helping Activision get the ball rolling on that project.

When the reception to the Crash remakes proved a hit, the idea of giving the same treatment to some of PlayStation's most popular IPs really started to take off.

"Remakes and remasters were the things I was chasing after. So that's why the dev team was built," Mumbauer explained. "What I can tell you is that's what I was chasing because I believed that there was value in doing something like a remake of God of War at the visual fidelity of today. Or, a remake of Uncharted 1 at the visual fidelity of today."

It's worth pointing out that Mumbauer didn't say whether or not his team at Sony San Diego Studio started development on a PlayStation remake in any official capacity - just that it was being looked into. It's also unclear if God Of War and the first Uncharted were just examples he pulled out during this conversation, though I'd assume that if Sony were seriously considering PS4 remakes, these two games would have been very near the front of the queue.

Sony's apparent one-time fixation with remakes has gone on to yield some surprising results, too. Titles like MediEvil and Shadow Of The Colossus were remade for the PlayStation 4 with impressive results, while Demon's Souls on PlayStation 5 is quite possibly one of the best launch titles I've ever played. Sony Santa Monica Studio is telling its own, all-new story with God Of War right now, but a remake of the original trilogy on PS5 with enhanced graphics and the same screen-filling boss battles? Well, that's got too much potential to ignore. Here's hoping Sony hasn't put the idea to bed forever.
