The next God of War game will launch for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, according to the former director for the series.

Late last year, the sequel was confirmed, though after the stunning shift that the reboot put in, it would have been nonsensical to leave Kratos and Atreus hanging on top of that mountain. More than ten million copies have been sold since launch, earning it the achievement of being the best-selling game in the fifteen year series, and over one hundred media outlets named it the Game Of The Year in 2018. I completed God of War only last weekend, as part of the PlayStation Plus Collection for the PlayStation 5, and the gameplay is so very moreish that I'm tempted to return for the hearty platinum trophy. That does involve killing all of the corrupted Valkyries, so I might need to steel my nerves for such a task.

Anyway, God of War 2 (which is not titled "God of War: Ragnarok," says director Cory Barlog) is still in development, though we're not sure how close it is to completion. The PS5 showcase revealed its logo, without a flashy and snazzy trailer to accompany it, and we know that its release window is 2021. Woolly, yes, but we shouldn't expect the game to be hitting the shelves for some time yet. However, we could do some detective work in the meantime. David Jaffe, the former series director of God of War, was streaming the game to his Twitch channel when a fan wondered about the status of God of War 2.

"I'm sure the next God of War will be on PS4, PS5. Of course, it will be," replied Jaffe. Alright, he's not "sure" in the dictionary definition of the word, seeing as Jaffe hasn't been attached to God of War since God of War 2, which was released in 2007. It's appreciated, but it's unlikely that Jaffe has dished the dirt on the inner workings of Sony Santa Monica, due to his distance from the franchise. But, it is another addition to the pile of evidence that the next God of War game will be cross-generational.

SIE CEO Jim Ryan was content to swerve a question about the new God of War being a PS5 exclusive, claiming that he had "nothing to say about that today." A number of new PS5 games are or will be available on the PlayStation 4, like Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon: Forbidden West, so this strange answer allowed some room to ruminate on the possibilities. "We've got a community of PS4 gamers 100 million-strong," added Ryan. "It would be wrong to walk away from those people too early." It's a very valid point, especially as PS5s have been as rare as hen's teeth recently. Fingers crossed that both camps pick up the Leviathan axe once again, and embark on a world-shattering adventure with Kratos and Atreus.
