HBO Developing A 'Bloodborne' TV Series, According To Report

They won't give us a sequel, but they'll give us a series?

Take this one with a huge pinch of salt, but a new report has surfaced that suggests HBO is working with Sony to develop a series based on... Bloodborne.

Released as a PlayStation 4 exclusive back in 2015, Bloodborne is a masterpiece. It's one of this writer's favourite games - a moody action RPG developed by Dark Souls studio FromSoftware with lashings of gothic horror and Lovecraftian monsters? Yeah, it ticks all my boxes.

Speaking of FromSoftware, take a look at our tour of Dark Souls 3 below!

While Bloodborne has a story, it's not exactly straightforward. Its narrative is intrinsically tied to gameplay, to exploring new areas and piecing together events from your own understanding of its many twisted environments. It's not exactly screaming out for a TV series, although I can kind of see how it might work as a straight-up horror.

According to That Hashtag Show, HBO is keen to continue its partnership with Sony beyond The Last Of Us. To that end, a limited-run Bloodborne series is currently in the early stages of development.

That Hashtag Show claims that the series will be structured like Dread or The Raid, in that the series protagonist is forced to move through a fairly straightforward story while dealing with a series of battles with increasingly frightening enemies. The proposed eight-episode season would cap off each instalment with a fight with one of the bosses from the games. They claim the show will keep Bloodborne's, um, bloody violence, and that based off concept art it'll be a "visual feast for the eyes".

While this all sounds promising enough, I'd stress once again that you should treat this as nothing more than a rumour for now. That Hashtag Show has accurately a predicted a fair few things in the past, but they've also gotten it wrong before. We do know Sony is keen to adapt more of its franchises for TV, however, and Bloodborne could well be one of them. Watch this space.
