Legacy Of Kain Fans Are Campaigning For A Next-Gen Remake

It's probably fair to say that the Legacy Of Kain franchise is one that doesn't really get the love it deserves. While not as well-remembered a series as the likes of other 90s franchises like Crash Bandicoot, or Spyro, Legacy Of Kain still beloved for the way it deftly combined exploration and combat with a story and graphics that were leaps and bounds ahead of a lot of other titles that were around at the time.

The gothic adventure series sees you play as a pair vampiric antiheroes over numerous games. The story started with Blood Omen: Legacy Of Kain all the way back in 1996, but it's been on ice since 2003's Legacy Of Kain: Defiance. 18 years since the last game in the franchise, and a small but dedicated group of fans are more ravenous than ever at the idea of a revival.

As with any cult video game franchise, there seem to be multiple petitions from fans begging Square Enix (the current holder of the IP) to revive Legacy Of Kain in the form of a new game or series of remakes. I'd certainly love to see Soul Reaver running on a next-gen console, but there's plenty of potential in an entirely new entry too.

Over on Change.org there are a handful of petitions just like this one from Austin Clifton. Like so many of us, he remembers Soul Reaver as being lightyears ahead of its time, praising it for the way in which it refused to hold the player's hand and offer a truly challenging experience.

"The whole reason we keep asking you guys for another Legacy of Kain, is to finally see another story after what Defiance left us," Clifton wrote in an open plea to Square Enix. "You left us on a cliff hanger! I think if we get a remaster, it will invite new people who have never played it, and to give to the original fans nostalgia.

"We have been waiting 13 years for something new, for a reboot, and nothing has happened. If you do decide to do this, you honestly have no idea how many people you will stun and shock, and completely make happy! I think a remake, or reboot will definitely help with this situation to see where it takes you."

Meanwhile, there's a small but entirely passionate group over on Facebook who remain pretty dedicated to sharing their love of the series in the hopes it'll come back one day.

Interestingly, Legacy Of Kain has actually been available for external developers to license through the Square Enix Collective service since 2017. That suggests it has a genuine chance of returning from the dead at some point, provided a developer has the right idea and the fans are able to keep that flame alive.
