It's safe to say this is one of the most frequently requested features regarding the PlayStation 5 is for Sony to enable support for SSD storage expansions.

There's currently no way to move PS5 games from an SSD to an external hard drive, and off-the-shelf drives aren't yet certified by Sony. With next-gen games ballooning in size, the only way to clear space for new games on the console right now is simply to delete whichever games you aren't playing and redownload them at a later date when you decide you'd like to play 'em again. Not exactly ideal.

The good news is that Sony intends to introduce support for SSD storage expansions by summer. That's according to a new report from Bloomberg's Takashi Mochizuki (via VGC). Mochizuki claims that support for storage expansions will be enabled in an upcoming firmware update that will also unlock higher cooling-fan speeds to make sure the next-gen console doesn't overheat in the wake of increasingly graphically demanding games.

"As previously announced, we are working to enable M.2 SSD storage expansion for PlayStation 5. The timing has not been announced and details will be shared later," a spokesman for Sony told Bloomberg.

It's worth noting that we can move PS4 games between the SSD and an external HDD, which is something... but given the PS5 features just 667.2GB of usable storage, the next-gen games released over the course of this year will undoubtedly cause the console to fill up fast. Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War already takes up a whopping fifth of space, while the likes of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon's Souls demand between 50-60GB each.

With games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Horizon Forbidden West scheduled to release this year, here's hoping Sony moves on storage expansions sooner rather than later.
