PlayStation Drops Surprise Freebie For PS4 And PS5 Users

PlayStation and Capcom have teamed up to treat PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 users to a surprise freebie - and it's one fans of Resident Evil won't want to miss out on.

Earlier this week Capcom confirmed that we'll be getting our first proper look at Resident Evil Village in action on 21 January. The survival horror, which is expected to launch later this year, was first announced during the PlayStation 5 reveal last summer and looks like a terrifying step forward for the series that promises to build on the success of Resident Evil 7.

Ahead of that, fans can redeem the below code to claim a special Resident Evil Village PlayStation avatar for free, though this does come with some caveats. The biggest is that, at least for now, the freebie seems to be limited to the US PSN, meaning if you live in Europe, Asia, or anywhere else in the world, there's no way to claim this without setting up a US PSN account.

While setting up such an account is relatively easy to do (and completely free) it might be a bit more effort than its worth - especially for an avatar. Still, if you really want it... do what you have to do I guess. It's unclear if this code is limited-time or not either, so you might want to strike while the iron is hot.

Capcom confirmed a few months back that Resident Evil Village will follow on from the events of Resident Evil 7, and pick up the stories of Ethan Winters and Chris Redfield. Capcom teases that longtime Resi protagonist Chris has "lost his status as a hero" in the upcoming game - something we kind of assumed from the reveal trailer in which he shoots someone in the face at point-blank range. Still, it'll be interesting to see where that goes.

The game's producers have also hinted that the game is called Resident Evil Village because the titular location is "another protagonist". I have no idea what that's supposed to mean, but I'm sure the answer will be as twisted and disturbing as you'd expect from a Resident Evil game. We'll find out more next week.
