PlayStation Refunds Players Who Just Purchased January PS Plus Free Game

Earlier this week Sony unveiled the PlayStation Plus free games for January 2021 - a pretty decent lineup of three very different single-player titles. Starting Tuesday, January 5th, PlayStation 4 users can download Shadow Of The Tomb Raider and Greedfall, which are both well worth your time.
The last game in the rebooted Tomb Raider trilogy is definitely divisive and frequently clunky, but if you have a PS Plus subscription already you've nothing to lose by checking it out. If nothing else, it's an absolutely stunning-looking video game. Greedfall, meanwhile, is a pretty fun RPG that's equal parts The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Another solid freebie.
Both of these games will be available on PS4 and PS5, but next-gen console owners will also get a third bonus title in the form of Maneater, the surprisingly fun shark sim from earlier this year.
It's a super impressive lineup, to be sure. Even so, the same thing ends up happening every month. Because nobody can predict which games Sony will make free as part of the monthly range, there are always a few people who express regret at having just purchased one of the games days before it was announced as a PS Plus freebie. I've done that with at least four or five titles now, but it's usually par for the course.
Except in this instance, Sony seems to be refunding a number of players who had recently paid for Maneater. BraeWhyIt took to Reddit to reveal they'd been sent a message from Sony reimbursing them for their purchase of the shark attack game.
The message read: "As a subscriber of PlayStation Plus, we will refund the purchase price of this product to your PlayStation Store wallet as this is a PlayStation Plus monthly game. This will not affect your ability to play the game as we have not removed the game from your library."
The Reddit user clarified that their PS5 is US region and that they picked up Maneater last month, which seems like a pretty generous timeframe for Sony to be giving out refunds... especially when the game isn't actually free to download for another week. Other users who picked up the game more recently have also took to the thread to claim they've also received refunds.
This isn't something Sony has ever really done before, so it's not clear if this is a one-off or a genuine shift in policy for PlayStation Plus freebies going forward. Either way, if you picked up Maneater in the last month, you might want to check your messages.
