Backpack-Wearing Cat Detective Simulator ‘Stray’ Launches This Year, Sony Confirms

Stray might genuinely be the only video game I care about anymore. Seriously. You can keep your sequels to Horizon Zero Dawn and God Of War. Stuff your Hogwarts Legacy and your Gotham Knights. Now I know there's a video game that lets you explore a dystopian sci-fi city as a little cat with a backpack, nothing else matters.

We've seen brief glimpses of the BlueTwelve Studio-developed game for years now, but it wasn't until the PlayStation 5 reveal event last year that we got our first real look at Stray in action. I don't know what the cat is called, or what is in his little backpack, but I do know that I love him and would die for him. Take a look at the trailer below.

"Stray is a third-person cat adventure game set amidst the detailed neon-lit alleys of a decaying cybercity and the murky environments of its seedy underbelly," publisher Annapurna Interactive said.

"Players will play as a stray cat, roaming surroundings high and low, defend against unforeseen threats and solve the mysteries of this unwelcoming place inhabited by nothing but unassuming droids and dangerous creatures. Lost, alone and separated from family, players must untangle an ancient mystery to escape a long-forgotten cybercity and find the way home."

While Sony had remained tight-lipped on when exactly Stray would be coming to PlayStation 5, we finally have some idea of when the Best Video Game Of All Time will be releasing.

As spotted by industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, SIE Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan announced a bunch of previously unknown release dates for many smaller PS5 titles during a CES press conference. Stray will be releasing in October 2021, alongside Ghostwire Tokyo. You can take a look at the rest of the release dates below, but since these other games don't include cats with backpacks, I don't know why you'd care.

If you needed something to look forward to this year (besides the prospect of a deadly life-changing pandemic finally being over), then Stray might just be it. Only nine months to go!
