Grand Theft Auto, as a series, has sold 345 million games. That means it is closing in on the total number of sales across twenty years of Pokémon games. Cor.

"We pour our full resources into bringing out the individual traits of the more than 800 Pokémon, and making the charms of this full complement of characters known as widely as possible," said The Pokémon Company on its official corporate website.

"As Pokémon approaches its 25th anniversary, today it has grown into a brand that transcends national and cultural borders and connects all generations." Something else that also speaks to multiple cultures and generations is spectacular criminal activity and exploding each other to high heaven, if the sales statistics of the Grand Theft Auto series are anything to go by. As per the latest report from Rockstar Games, 345 million titles have been sold around the world, with two-fifths of those sales thanks to the stratospheric success of Grand Theft Auto 5.

But what would it look like if Pokémon were introduced to the world of Grand Theft Auto, I hear you ask probably? Well, let's find out together...

Tweak Town has supplied a handy-dandy comparison chart for other big names in gaming and how they compare to Grand Theft Auto. Final Fantasy lags with 159 million units sold since its inception, whereas Minecraft and The Sims tie with 200 million units sold each. Pokémon is just ahead of Grand Theft Auto with 368 million, and of this, Pokémon Red, Green and Blue account for 31 million sales. Then, it's Gold and Silver with 23 million sales and Sword and Shield takes the bronze with 20 million sales. Ergo, it's clear that the chart is counting every single Pokémon game released in history, which means Grand Theft Auto's achievement is notable given that it possesses far fewer games in its series.

Grand Theft Auto 5 for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 is slated to launch later this year, and it is possible that it might surpass Pokémon with these forecast sales. On the other hand, Pokémon Brilliant Diamondand Shining Pearl are on their way, with Pokémon Legends: Arceus following in 2022. It's going to be a close one between these two series that are like chalk and cheese.
