Pristine ‘Pokémon Blue’ Copy Found After 20 Years, And It’s Worth A Small Fortune

It's something that belongs in a storybook - stumbling upon a pot of gold buried away in your childhood home, also known as the last place you'd ever think to search. This gamer has been reunited with an amazing treasure in the form of a pristine copy of Pokémon Blue from 1996, and its worth is unquantifiable.

Reddit user Lanai explained that their parents rang them up to ask whether they wanted an old game they'd found while they were sorting out the house. It was none other than a sealed copy of Pokémon Blue in perfect condition, if you can believe it. Honestly, they could have handed over a fistful of diamonds to their child and it wouldn't have equalled the same value. Alright, alright, that's an exaggeration...

"My dad told me he bought it for me as a birthday gift when I was a kid and lost it," continued Lanai. Commenters are similarly stunned by the quality of the game after more than two decades, and strongly encouraged the gamer to keep it sealed to preserve its value. Sealed classic Pokémon titles like Red, Blue, Emerald, and Yellow sell for thousands and thousands on eBay. And, of course, Pokémon Trading Cards are one of the hottest things on the market right now - a card from the McDonald's Happy Meal promotion sold for more than $500 for its unique printing defect. In short, the monster hunting series is a real cash cow for those who know how to maximise the worth of the various historic titles, cards, and collectibles.

However, the Reddit user has no plans to part with their serendipitous copy of Pokémon Blue, and that's understandable. "I am grateful to have such wonderful parents who not only bought me two Pokémon games (this one that was unknown to me and a Pokémon Red that I actually got for my birthday) but who also realized how much this game meant to me when they found it this past year," added Lanai. "Undoubtedly the monetary value for this box is outweighed by the nostalgic and sentimental value this game brings to me. I am beyond lucky to have this game in such great condition but even luckier to have it as a physical representation of my parents love and what was a blessed childhood."

So, you'd be as shocked as I was to see that Lanai posted another photo of the game running on a translucent Game Boy Color, with the caption, "Feelin' nostalgic". The community was horrified to learn that they'd opened the box, especially when they'd been so invested in keeping it safe and sound. Well. You got me. It was an April Fool's joke, and Lanai had to give an excuse for their antics. "I really did get a brand new sealed Blue. This is just a picture of my wife playing her Pokémon Blue I thought I'd troll people with for 4/1," they said. Jeez.
