Activision has announced that a Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Alpha is taking place exclusively on PlayStation 4 this weekend. From Friday September 18th to Sunday September 20th, PS4 owners can be among the first in the world to try out Treyarch and Raven Software's upcoming FPS - entirely for free. The news was announced during the PS5 showcase last night, which also have us an extended look at the Black Ops Cold War campaign
I should also clarify don't need to have pre-ordered the game to access the Alpha this weekend, which is the case for certain upcoming Beta weekends. Literally, the only thing you need for this particular demo is access to a PS4, and you can dive right in.
Activision has yet to confirm exactly what's waiting for us in the Alpha, but expect the same mixture of large and small scale maps modes that we were able to check out earlier this month. For our full impressions on how the Black Ops Cold War multiplayer is shaping up, you can head here.
Don't worry if you don't have a PS4 - Xbox One and PC gamers will be able to go hands-on with the new Call Of Duty via one of multiple beta weekend starting next month.
Unsurprisingly, the very first Beta Weekend is exclusively for PlayStation 4 owners. It'll run from Thursday, October 8th to Monday, October 12th. Early Access runs between the 8th and 9th, and is only available for players who have pre-ordered Black Ops Cold War on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5. Between the 10th and 12th, the PlayStation 4 beta is open to all PS4 owners regardless of if you pre-ordered or not.
The second Beta Weekend is for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC owners. This bunch of tests will also support the previously announced cross-platform play, so you can dive in with friends on other consoles. It starts Thursday, October 15th, and lasts through to Monday, October 19th.
PlayStation 4 owners can play through the entire second Beta Weekend regardless of whether or not they pre-ordered. If you're playing on Xbox One or PC, however, you will need to have pre-ordered to play the beta between the 15th and 16th. The second open beta commences on the 17th, and that's when every player on every platform can get involved, no pre-order needed. I'm aware that's a lot of information to take in, so feel free to make a note.
The gist of it is this: everybody is going to get a turn on Black Ops Cold War eventually... but PlayStation 4 owners have the best set of options by far. Hopefully I'll see you out there this weekend.
