We knew that Pokémon cards were pretty pricey, but this news takes the Bisharp. Last week, an original Pokémon Trading Card Game Booster Box sold at auction for an astonishing $408,000.
It's a First Edition Base Set, printed more than twenty years ago, and kept in pristine condition thanks to its shrink wrapping. In the set are 102 base cards, including the original shiny Charizard, which has reached prices around the $150,000 mark when sold individually. Logic bragged about snagging a First Edition Charizard card last year, and parted with $220,000 to be the one who walked away with the legendary piece of memorabilia. He even gloated to YouTuber Logan Paul about it, who is a fellow collector of the cards, in a show of good sportsmanship. In The First Edition Booster box there are 36 booster packs, which brings the total number of cards to 396. That's decent odds for anybody hunting those elusive and attractive holos.
This Heritage Auctions event, which took place in Dallas, Texas, auctioned off another fifteen Pokémon-themed lots during its Comics and Comic Art Auction last week, accruing about $1.3 million in value between the sixteen lots. Blimey. The buyer is available to contact over possible offers on the box, and they're looking for $468,000 or more for the First Edition Base Set, which would give them a nice net gain of around $60,000. It's a tough call. Buy this rather picturesque refurbished penthouse apartment with three bedrooms including an ensuite which looks out onto the sea, or buy a set of limited edition Pokémon cards in mint condition which is as rare as Combusken teeth. If you're agonising over the choice, know you're not alone.
2021 marks the 25th anniversary of the Pokémon games, and The Pokémon Company are pulling out all of the stops to celebrate the momentous occasion. Events and promotions will be held all year, with "cool themed collectibles" on offer, and collaborations with a handful of the "biggest names in music." Katy Perry is confirmed, and I've got my fingers crossed that this will be Lorde's triumphant return to the industry, in a haunting and esoteric song about Gothitelle's ability to predict misfortune in the future. And, there will be monthly releases of reprints of classic cards, with each "First Partner Pack" centering around one of the eight regions.
