'Resident Evil 8' Details Reportedly Surface Online, Featuring Werewolves, Zombies And More

Capcom has found massive success with the Resident Evil franchise of late by returning the popular survival horror to its roots. Last year's Resident Evil 2 remake was one of the best games in the year, and a commercial hit to boot. We're also expecting the upcoming Resident Evil 3, arriving April 3rd, to be similarly successful.

While I'm a big fan of Capcom's new love of looking back, I can't help but wonder what's in store for the future of Resident Evil. Resident Evil 8 has yet to be officially announced, but we can certainly assume it's on the way. But will the next brand-new entry take its inspiration from the "REmakes," or serve as a continuation of 2017's first-person Resident Evil 7?

According to multiple reports that surfaced recently, it's the latter. An anonymous tipster who got in touch with fan site BioHazard Declassified has claimed that Resident Evil 8 will stick with the first-person gameplay of its predecessor. These reports were later backed by Eurogamer, who have heard similar things from their own sources close to Capcom.

BioHazard Declassified also heard from its mysterious tipster that Resident Evil 8 will see the return of Ethan, the protagonist of Resident Evil 7. In addition, it's rumoured that series mainstay Chris Redfield will make an appearance in some capacity. We last saw Chris at the end of Resident Evil 7, where we even got a chance to play as the former S.T.A.R.S member in a DLC chapter.

There were also a few details regarding potential enemies in the game. Longtime fans of the series will no doubt be glad to hear that classic zombies are potentially poised to return. New threats include werewolves - a strange first for the series - and a female "ghost" character that can stalk the player through the world and is unaffected by conventional weapons.

If Resident Evil 8 directly follows the events of its predecessor, the return of Ethan and Chris would certainly make sense. I can also see Capcom introducing a distinctly 'Resident Evil' take on werewolves, so that doesn't sound too unbelievable to me. The most surprising thing, in all honesty, is the idea that Capcom would return to first-person gameplay after the huge success of Resident Evil 2.

That's not to say I'm against of the idea of Capcom continuing to experiment with first-person. I thought Resident Evil 7 was a great game that only came off the rails slightly towards the end - and that certainly wasn't the fault of the first-person gameplay. I guess having remakes in third-person and new entries in first-person is a good way for Capcom to differentiate between the two branches of Resident Evil we seem to have right now.

For now, we'll have to take these rumours with a pinch of salt and wait for official word from Capcom. No doubt the developer will be focused on Resident Evil 3 right now, so we're unlikely to learn anything more about Resident Evil 8 until after the remake has launched.
