The OG 'Resident Evil' Is Being Remade In First-Person With Unreal Engine

Hey big Spencer.

The original Resident Evil remains an absolute masterclass in how to do survival horror perfectly. Every inch of the Spencer Mansion, from its winding corridors to its damp and dirty sewers, is expertly designed to scare the crap out of you. It knows when to hold back, and it knows when to send a zombified dog crashing through the window to give you a heart attack.

There was a time when I probably would have said that Resident Evil didn't need a remake. But that was before 2019's Resident Evil 2 proved that it's entirely possible to keep the essence of a classic survival horror while polishing it up and making it far more accessible and streamlined. While Capcom has yet to officially announce such a remake of the original game, a team of fans is hard at work bringing the Spencer Mansion nightmare to life once more.

Take a look at it in action below (or via this link).

YouTube channel Residence of Evil first shared the above video, which is a stunning first-person remake of Resident Evil in Unreal Engine 4 by indie developer MoonGlint. Residence of Evil is currently working with MoonGlint on a survival horror title called Vigil, and this Resi remake apparently came about as a result of testing the project's lighting effects.

As you can see, it's an utterly gorgeous build that reimagines the original game in the style of Resident Evil Village. I daresay Spencer Mansion has never looked better, with truly impressive lighting, weather, and sound design all working together to create something genuinely special. I was particularly blown away by the torrential rain hammering away at the windows. It really reinforces the way the original game made players feel well and truly trapped in the mansion.

Residence of Evil has suggested that MoonGlint may even release a playable build of the remake if it gains enough support, so maybe head over to the devs Ko-fi page and chuck 'em a few quid if you want to get your hands on this one.
