'Resident Evil: Project Resistance' Is a 4v1 That Lets You Play As Mr X

It's been officially confirmed by Capcom that Resident Evil: Project Resistance is an 4v1 online multiplayer survival horror experience.

First teased earlier in the week, it's now been officially confirmed by the fine folk at Capcom that Resident Evil: Project Resistance is an asymmetrical online multiplayer spinoff that pits a team of four co-op survivors against one other human player whose only goal is to obliterate the survivors using whatever grisly monsters or tools may be at their disposal as the survivors attempt to escape from the twisted experiment.

In each match, one player will be designated as the "Mastermind", who can track the remaining four players through a network of security cameras and will attempt to stay one step ahead of the group at all times to prevent the escape of the four survivors. "The Mastermind plots a deadly course by wielding a strategic deck of cards to create dangerous obstacles for the Survivors, such as summoning vicious creatures, setting traps, manipulating the environment, and weaponizing security cameras," Capcom wrote in a press release.

As we saw in the original CG trailer (above), it looks as if the Mastermind will be able to call on the help of a number of grim beasts from past Resident Evil games, including zombies (obviously), Lickers, and even Mr X/Tyrant. The Mastermind will even be able to directly control the majority of the monsters they unleash, meaning that we'll be able to play as the terrifying Mr X for the first time in a Resident Evil game. That's sure to be a cathartic experience for those of us who still have nightmares about the Trenchcoat-wearing behemoth stalking us through the halls of Raccoon City Police Department.

It certainly sounds like the Mastermind holds most of the cards then, but it wouldn't really be a survival horror experience if the odds weren't massively stacked against the desperate band of survivors, would it? Capcom confirmed that the other four players will have to work together to fend off the Mastermind's attacks and complete puzzles to escape before time runs out. As you'd expect, each of the survivors have their own unique skills that will help the team best the Mastermind's challenges and get out alive.

Capcom has confirmed that the spinoff is being made in the RE Engine (the same engine used to develop Resident Evil 2) by an internal team with the help of NeoBards Entertainment, who previously worked with Capcom on Ominusha Warlord. According to Eurogamer, who got the chance to go hands-on with the title at the Tokyo Games Show, there's a chance that Project Resistance might not actually see release, as it's currently only a prototype. There'll be a closed beta next month that runs from October 4 to October 7 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, after which Capcom will apparently decide whether otr not to proceed through to a full release.

If you want to try out Resident Evil: Project Resistance for yourself when the closed beta arrives (and I know I do), then you'll be able to register for it from now until September 18 right here.
