Resident Evil 8 - officially called Resident Evil Village - will wrap up the story that was started in 2017's Resident Evil 7 . Producers Tsuyoshi Kanda and Pete Fabiano revealed a handful of new details on the upcoming survival horror in an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu.

Over on Twitter, Resident Evil historian Alex Aniel was kind enough to translate and share the most interesting details from the interview. Among them, we learned how Village is related to Resident Evil 7, how close the game is to being finished, and exactly why the game is called Village instead of Resident Evil 8.

According to the producers, Resident Evil Village has been in development for nearly three and a half years, and is roughly 60 percent complete. It was also confirmed that we'll see more of the game in action in August. It's been rumoured that Sony has another PlayStation 5 event planned for next month, so it's likely this is where the game will further airtime.

The pair also confirmed that Village will conclude the story of Ethan Winters, the unfortunate soul who got wrapped up in the events of Resi 7 while searching for his missing wife. Unfortunately, the developers didn't reveal which of the previous game's endings is now canon. You might remember that Resident Evil 7 asked you to choose between saving your wife and another character?

It'll be interesting to see which of those separate threads Capcom picks up. For now, the developers tease that you can tell if you watch the reveal trailer closely enough. I clearly haven't watched it closely enough, however, as I've still absolutely no idea which direction they've gone in.

The interview also briefly touches on Chris Redfield. The longtime series protagonist appeared at the end of Resident Evil 7, and showed up looking very different in the Village trailer. According to Capcom, Chris has "lost his status as a hero" - as evidenced by the trailer showing him shoot someone in the face at point-blank range.

Finally, and perhaps most intriguing of all, is the reasoning behind calling it Resident Evil Village. According to the producers, the title has village in it, because the titular location is "another protagonist" in the game. What on earth is that supposed to mean?

Resident Evil Village won't be out until 2021 for next-gen consoles, so these mysteries will have to wait for another day.
