Everybody's favourite car-based football game Rocket League is going free-to-play! Developer Psyonix announced that the hugely popular game, which first released back in 2015, will be free for everyone on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC later this Summer. It will also no longer be available to download via Steam, launching exclusively through Epic Games Store instead when the update lands.
"After nearly five years, millions of players, and billions of soccar matches played, it's time to talk about the next chapter of Rocket League," Psyonix wrote. "The game wouldn't be where it is today without our dedicated and amazing community. Today, we're excited to announce that we're gearing up to make that community even bigger."
The developer explained that the "core gameplay" will remain the same, but that we can expect some updates to the game's menus to the make navigation a little easier. The team has also promised to revamp and improve major features like tournaments and challenges, while also introducing cross-platform progression between all consoles.

"Rocket League action on the field will still be the same core, high-octane hybrid of sports and action you love today," Psynoix assured fans. "And soon, even more players will share that love."
Once the game does go free-to-play, anyone who owned or played Rocket League online before the update will be granted "Legacy Status". This includes a number of cool cosmetic items to mark you out as a longtime fan of the game, including item upgrades, a special banner, and even a new title that displays the first year you played.
Psyonix also explained that that your "hard-earned inventory" son't be going anywhere when the free-to-play update lands. Any items or progress you've made can all be carried between platforms thanks to the new cross-platform progression. Psyonix promised to share more details on how all of that will work in the "coming months."

Rocket League has always been an immensely popular multiplayer game as it is, so I would imagine Pysonix is expecting big things are going to come from the game's move to free-to-play. I'm certainly excited to finally dive in and give the game a real go. I might even get good at it. Maybe. Probably not, though.
